TERMIS 2021 | Utilizing bioglass as a drug delivery system

Julian Jones, PhD, Imperial College London, London, UK, describes the applications of bioglass in osteoporosis and cancer. Nanoparticles including bioglass release ions and can be directed to specific tissue, making them a suitable drug delivery system. Bioglass containing strontium ranelate have shown to safely mitigate the effects of osteoporosis by maintaining osteoblast activity, and when containing zinc, can effectively kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. This interview took place at the 6th World Congress of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS 2021).
