Carmine Gentile, PharmD/PhD, FAHA, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia, describes research on replicating the vasculature within heart tissues. Bioengineered cardiac tissues are a promising therapy for patients who have heart failure, and developing a functioning vasculature is vital for these patients. Research on bioinks and stem cell-derived heart tissues have enabled to develop in vitro cardiac models. Dr Gentile additionally emphasizes the requirement for a multidisciplinary approach within the field, with experts across different specialties needed to successfully develop and transplant tissue engineered cardiac tissue. This interview took place at 6th world congress of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS 2021).
