TERMIS 2021 | Challenges with developing regenerative therapies for musculoskeletal disorders

Jiao Jiao Li, PhD, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia, describes issues developing regenerative therapies for musculoskeletal disorders. Finding suitable materials with the correct properties for bioprinting remains a major hurdle, and whilst induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have shown promise in cellular therapies, more research is required for successful clinical adaptation. Dr Li additionally highlights how regulatory authorities may have difficulties classifying novel products such as extracellular vesicles (EVs), due to their complexity, as well as problems relating to large scale manufacturing of tissue-engineered therapies. This interview took place at the 6th World Congress of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS 2021).
