Aylvin Dias, PhD, DSM, Geleen, The Netherlands, discusses improvements that need to be made in the development of surgical implants, including ensuring reproducibility in the manufacturing process and providing traceable documentation with the medical devices. Dr Dias additionally highlights the need to take clinician feedback into account, in terms of biocompatibility and mechanical stress during implantation.
