Manuel Carrondo, PhD, Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (iBET), Oeiras, Portugal, explains the importance of developing analytical tools to improve the characterization and quality control of viral vector-based gene therapies and cell therapies being manufactured, in order to not only meet regulatory requirements but also allow the improved understanding and optimization of manufacturing protocols. Analytical tools being developed utilize a range of technologies, including machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), in order to assist in the interpretation of large datasets obtained. This interview took place at the Advanced Therapies Congress & Expo 2021.
