TERMIS 2021 | Determining the metabolic requirements for stem cell survival

Melvin Gurian, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, discusses identifying the minimum metabolic requirements for large scale growth of stem cells including mesenchymal stem cells. Uptake of oxygen and metabolites currently restrict clinical production of tissue engineered products and elucidating the optimal metabolic conditions for cells is essential for cell growth. Creation of a metabolic library of various sugars, amino acids and fatty acids can reveal which metabolites are necessary for cell survival. This interview took place at the 6th World Congress of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS 2021).
